Cake dish
For around 500 years the 'Tea Ceremony' has been important to the Japanese as a way of welcoming visitors. During the ceremony powdered green tea is made for and drunk by guests, and there are a number of rituals and rules which the host and guests follow.
This dish was specially made to use during the Tea Ceremony, when a small, delicate piece of cake was eaten as the tea was drunk. The sweetness of the cake tasted nice with the bitterness of the tea. After eating the cake, the person would admire the dish as part of the ceremony.
