What just happened?

To celebrate Vikings Live, we have replaced our Roman alphabet with the runic alphabet used by the Vikings, the Scandinavian ‘Younger Futhark’. The ‘Younger Futhark’ has only 16 letters, so we have used some of the runic letters more than once or combined two runes for one Roman letter.

For an excellent introduction to runes, we recommend Martin Findell’s book published by British Museum Press.

Stop the war

Not in my Name anti-war badge

CM 2003-5-63-2

Badges are often used to show political ideas. This one has been produced for a group called the 'Stop the War Coalition', who formed in Britain in 2001.

The Stop the War Coalition is opposed to the invasion of Iraq, as well as the 'War on Terror' announced by President Bush. On 15th February 2003 an estimated 5 million people worldwide took part in marches around the world against the war in Iraq.
