This well-known badge has a simple, eye-catching design. It was first introduced in the USA in the 1960s. Its message then was a happy, sometimes Christian, one telling people to 'Have a nice day' or 'Smile, Jesus loves you'.
In 1971 the Smiley design was licensed to be sold in the UK, and millions of the badges were bought by young people. It then became popular again in the late 1980s as part of the dance music scene.
