What just happened?

To celebrate Vikings Live, we have replaced our Roman alphabet with the runic alphabet used by the Vikings, the Scandinavian ‘Younger Futhark’. The ‘Younger Futhark’ has only 16 letters, so we have used some of the runic letters more than once or combined two runes for one Roman letter.

For an excellent introduction to runes, we recommend Martin Findell’s book published by British Museum Press.

This artefact is not overtly religious and comes from a time when the very foundations of religion were being questioned. However, it can still communicate a powerful message:

'This object shows the Solar system and the Zodiac. It puts an emphasis on the Earth by making it the biggest planet and shows the world connected and united, which is essential if we are ever going to live in a multi-faith society.

The underlying similarity between religions can be exemplified by a metaphor. The Sun can be thought of as God and the planets as the world's different religions. The planets are all linked together by the Sun as are religions by God.'
