This enamelled cross prompted the workshop participants to compare the arrival of Christianity in Britain with the experiences of other religious communities who have settled here more recently:
'This Christian artefact depicts Jesus' final steps and the long suffering he experienced through preaching the good news and sacrificing His life to save all Christians from sin. This object illustrates Jesus' strength and devotion to His faith, but it is also teaching us to accept the diverse cultures in our society today.
This plaque depicts the mocking of Jesus. Jesus was mocked, tortured and persecuted for leading people to God through a fresh path. Many religious leaders and their followers have been persecuted for having different beliefs in the same way.
For example, the Prophet Muhammad of Islam was ridiculed for moving away from idol worship. Guru Arjan Dev Ji, the fifth Guru of Sikhism was persecuted for his ideals, he became a martyr to his cause. In more recent times, religious intolerance has surfaced through Hitler's persecution of the Jews.
Therefore, I believe that an important message that can be taken from this artefact is that Jesus certainly did not die in vain. In that respect, every religion and all types of peoples have faced a struggle, yet we have seen them resist the ridicule and persecution. The faith of these people has always prevailed and for that reason we must all work together and help others to build their lives, to achieve their aims and to attain God in their own way, rather than to impose our selfish views upon them. It is important in today's society to move away from this isolation mentality and begin to accept each other.'
