Arabic Script: Mightier than the Sword

Page from the Qur'an

This text is from chapter 4 of the Qur'an (called al-Nisa', 'The Women') from the end of verse 157 to the beginning of verse 161. It is written on parchment in brownish-black ink. The format of the book is oblong, characteristic of early copies of the Qur'an, and traces of the original binding are visible to the right.

The eleven lines of text are inscribed in the angular Kufic script. Red dots are used to distinguish letters of the same shape and help with pronunciation, and a cluster of gold dots marks the end of verse 160.
