Views of Mount Fuji

Utagawa Hiroshige, 'The Sea at Satta, Suruga Province' (Suruga Satta kaijō), a colour woodblock print

From the series 'Thirty-six views of Mount Fuji' (Fuji sanjūrokkei)

This is without doubt Hiroshige's most forceful evocation of Fuji, and a tribute to Hokusai's great work 'Under the Wave, off Kanagawa', known as the 'Great Wave' (view no. 10 in this tour). From the earlier master Hiroshige takes the visual trick of a wave seeming to crash down on a distant object - here a boat rather than Mt Fuji. However, Hiroshige's scene is much more restrained, with its carefully balanced composition and repeating white fringe of foam.
