What just happened?

To celebrate Vikings Live, we have replaced our Roman alphabet with the runic alphabet used by the Vikings, the Scandinavian ‘Younger Futhark’. The ‘Younger Futhark’ has only 16 letters, so we have used some of the runic letters more than once or combined two runes for one Roman letter.

For an excellent introduction to runes, we recommend Martin Findell’s book published by British Museum Press.

The Shiraito ('White thread') Falls are still a noted beauty spot on the Shiba River, on the western slopes of Mt Fuji. According to old gazeteers, their height is recorded as 87 shaku (about 26 m) and their combined width 72 ken (about 130 m). The largest two were called the 'male' and 'female' falls but otherwise the thread-like streams were too numerous to name. The surrounding area was dense with wisteria, azaleas and maples.

The low viewpoint, the volumetric shading used in the rocks, and the framing of the composition with foliage are all elements of a Western-influenced style.
