Dürer and his legacy
Dürer and his Legacy
Albrecht Dürer (1471-1528) of Nuremberg was the
first truly international artist, a celebrity in his lifetime and
ever since. His use of new printing technologies ensured that his
works were appreciated and collected not only in his native country
but throughout Europe. He was the great master of the multiple
image, and his AD monogram became a widely recognized and respected
trademark.
This tour looks
at Dürer's life and at his astonishing artistic afterlife,
the process by which his work has been absorbed and adapted by
later artists.
The tour was
produced to accompany the exhibition
Albrecht Dürer and his legacy: the graphic
work of a Renaissance artist (5 December
2002 - 23 March 2003). The exhibition was sponsored by Wilmer,
Cutler and
Pickering.
