Annuraaq: clothing in the Arctic
Annuraaq: clothing in the Arctic
'When I became of marriageable age, my mother gave me advice,
which I wasn't too pleased to hear. She told me always to be
prepared, especially with clothes that were to be worn by my
husband for hunting ...'
Sarah A Haulli, 1990
'Fur was our only clothing, so we made sure it looked its
best.'
Rosie Iqallijuq, 1997
This tour features annuraaq, the traditional skin
clothing of the Native peoples of the North American Arctic.
Annuraaq, from which the English word 'anorak' is derived,
means 'an article of clothing' in the Inuktitut language.
The tour was written to accompany the exhibition Annuraaq -
Arctic Clothing from Igloolik (15 February - 27 May 2001)
which focused on contemporary work by women from Igloolik in
northern Canada. The exhibition was organised in collaboration with
the Department of Culture, Language, Elders, and Youth of the
Government of Nunavut, the Inullariit Elders' Society,
Igloolik, and the Igloolik Research Centre of the Research
Institute of Nunavut, who also kindly provided the quotations from
Igloolik elders used in this tour.
