Room 49: Roman Britain

    Pottery oil lamp

    Roman Britain, 1st century AD
Found in London, but made in Italy

This mould-made lamp belongs to a type known as a volute-lamp (from the decorative volutes flanking the nozzle). The scene on the discus (the circular decorated area) shows a satyr pounding or grinding something in a large mortar. The fabric and other characteristics of the lamp indicate that it was made in Italy.
