Featured on this note is the magnificent Piece Hall, or Cloth Hall, reflecting the importance of Halifax as a centre for the woollen trade in Yorkshire. Built in 1779, the hall contains 315 rooms and covers 10,000 square feet. Cloth was stored here, and handloom weavers and merchants brought their textiles for sale at the market held every Saturday. The Piece Hall is the only surviving cloth hall in Yorkshire.
