This panorama gives a multi-faceted view of
nineteenth-century life. In the foreground is a country scene, with
people walking in fields and sheep grazing by the River Eden. On
the far bank cattle are wading and a line of washing is hanging out
to dry. The dense buildings of the city of Carlisle rise in the
distance, factory chimneys contrasting with the castle and the
cathedral.
