This display complements the Museum’s exhibition Babylon: Myth and Reality. It features the work of Iraqi artists for whom their ancient cultural heritage is an ever-present source of inspiration.
Their references include Sumerian love poetry, cuneiform writing, the legendary Tower of Babel and tales from the Epic of Gilgamesh.
These artists explore ancient ideas and traditions to remind the viewer not only of their country’s great depth of history but also, as exemplified by the work of Syrian artist Issam Kourbaj, to lament the continued destruction of our shared heritage through war and neglect.
