Egyptian life (Room 61)

2500 BC - 7th century AD

Closed from January until November 2008

Much of our understanding of ancient Egyptian culture relates to magnificent royal tombs and temples, but the lives of ordinary people are often less well documented.

Room 61 uses the Museum collection to provide an insight into life in ancient Egypt, with artefacts demonstrating attitudes towards domesticity, the land, recreation and religion. The use of hieroglyphs and other scripts is explained, while items of furniture and jewellery provide what little evidence we have of everyday life at this time.
