Gold pendant
The Mughal emperors were known for their love of precious
stones, which they wore in pendants, rings, necklaces and
turban-clasps. The jewels on this pendant show a flying bird. His
body is a diamond, his wing tips and tail-feathers are emerald
green, and the rest of him is ruby red.
A few final facts...
The British Ambassador, visiting the Mughal court in 1616, gave
this description of Emperor Jahangir (reigned 1605-27):
'On one side [of his turban] hung a ruby unset, as big as a
walnut; on the other side a diamond as great; in the middle an
emerald like a hart, much bigger..'
