Hoards from Roman Britain are relatively common (over 1200 have now been reported), but gold coins are very rare. The Roman nobleman who owned these 126 gold coins must have been extremely wealthy. This hoard was worth the equivalent of a soldier's pay for over 10 years!
It is possible that the coins were part of a free gift of money made by the Emperor Marcus Aurelius (reigned AD 160-181) to senior officials when he came to power.
