Heavenly feet

An ancient Chinese custom was to tightly wrap up the feet of young girls, then never remove the bindings. This stopped their feet from growing properly, and meant that they could not run, or even walk easily.

During the 19th century, many people started to object to this and say that it was cruel. They formed societies and had meetings, promising never to bind their daughters' feet. This badge is of one of these groups, called the Heavenly Feet Society.

Foot binding was eventually outlawed at the start of the 20th century.
