Speeding chariot

Here, carved in just a few centimetres of marble, four horses are shown running abreast, their fiery manes blowing in the wind. This motif is picked up in the flying crest of the helmet of the foot soldier who rides in the chariot, and again in the flying cloak that billows behind the battered head of the charioteer. The distinctive manner of carving the manes also appears elsewhere in the frieze. We can use such clues to identify those blocks of the frieze that were carved by the same hand.
