What just happened?

To celebrate Vikings Live, we have replaced our Roman alphabet with the runic alphabet used by the Vikings, the Scandinavian ‘Younger Futhark’. The ‘Younger Futhark’ has only 16 letters, so we have used some of the runic letters more than once or combined two runes for one Roman letter.

For an excellent introduction to runes, we recommend Martin Findell’s book published by British Museum Press.

Introduction to the exhibition

Organised with Museo del Oro, Bogotá, this exhibition explores the rich and diverse cultures of Colombia before the 16th-century arrival of the Spanish. For centuries Europeans were dazzled by the legend of El Dorado – literally ‘the golden one’. Many stories were told of El Dorado – from a lost city of gold to a man covered in powdered gold. The exhibition uncovers the fascinating truth behind some of these myths.
