Herculaneum: ashes to ashes

In AD 79 Mount Vesuvius erupted and destroyed the Roman cities of Pompeii and Herculaneum. Andrew Wallace-Hadrill, formerly the Director of the British School at Rome and now Master of Sidney Sussex College, Cambridge, discusses his recent publication which gives a definitive overview of what we know and understand about Herculaneum, of what is still unknown and mysterious, and of the potential for future discoveries in both archaeological and political contexts.
