What just happened?

To celebrate Vikings Live, we have replaced our Roman alphabet with the runic alphabet used by the Vikings, the Scandinavian ‘Younger Futhark’. The ‘Younger Futhark’ has only 16 letters, so we have used some of the runic letters more than once or combined two runes for one Roman letter.

For an excellent introduction to runes, we recommend Martin Findell’s book published by British Museum Press.

Stephen Coppel is the Curator of modern prints and drawings in the Department of Prints and Drawings at the British Museum. He was appointed Assistant Keeper of the print collection in 1992 and became responsible for the modern collection in 2004. He was previously curator of prints and illustrated books at the National Gallery of Australia, Canberra from 1982 to 1992.
