What just happened?

To celebrate Vikings Live, we have replaced our Roman alphabet with the runic alphabet used by the Vikings, the Scandinavian ‘Younger Futhark’. The ‘Younger Futhark’ has only 16 letters, so we have used some of the runic letters more than once or combined two runes for one Roman letter.

For an excellent introduction to runes, we recommend Martin Findell’s book published by British Museum Press.

Marcel Marée is Assistant Keeper in the Department of Ancient Egypt and Sudan. Areas of expertise include the Middle Kingdom and Second Intermediate Period, epigraphy, prosopography, art history and iconography. He is Deputy Director of the epigraphic mission in Elkab and Hagar Edfu.

Current projects

  • Egyptian stelae in the British Museum from the Thirteenth to Seventeenth Dynasties:
    Catalogue co-authored with Detlef Franke; includes scientific contributions from Janet Ambers, Caroline Cartwright, Duncan Hook and Philip Fletcher, and drawings by Richard Parkinson.

  • Editing The Second Intermediate Period (Thirteenth to Seventeenth Dynasties): Current Research, Future Prospects, proceedings of the like-named colloquium on 14-16 July 2004.
    Will be published by Peeters (Leuven, Belgium) later this year.
