What just happened?

To celebrate Vikings Live, we have replaced our Roman alphabet with the runic alphabet used by the Vikings, the Scandinavian ‘Younger Futhark’. The ‘Younger Futhark’ has only 16 letters, so we have used some of the runic letters more than once or combined two runes for one Roman letter.

For an excellent introduction to runes, we recommend Martin Findell’s book published by British Museum Press.

 Academia profile

Elisabeth R. O’Connell is an Assistant Keeper (Curator) in the Department of Ancient Egypt and Sudan with responsibility for Roman and Late Antique collections.

She joined the museum in 2007, having completed a PhD in the Ancient History and Mediterranean Archaeology Graduate Group at the University of California, Berkeley, with a dissertation on adaptive reuse of ancient Egyptian monumental architecture in Late Antiquity. Her wider research interests include the social history and material culture of the Roman Empire and Late Antiquity. Her research engages approaches to the integrated study of ancient texts and their archaeological contexts.

In addition to research on the collection, Elisabeth co-directed (with W. V. Davies) the British Museum Expedition to Hagr Edfu (Egypt) until 2013 and conducts fieldwork at Sheikh Ibada (Egypt). She gained previous fieldwork experience at sites in both Egypt and Tunisia.
