OpenSearch

You can now search the British Museum website or the Collection database online from any website, using any computer.

How do I set this up and start searching?

Using Internet Explorer 7

  1. Click on the arrow to the right of the search box in the top, right corner of your browser (where you can normally search using a search engine, such as Google)
  2. Select ‘Add search providers’ from the drop-down list
  3. Select ‘British Museum’ to search the British Museum website or select ‘British Museum collection search’ to search the Collection database (you can add both if you wish)
  4. Searching will then return results from one of the British Museum searches.

Using Firefox

  1. Click on the arrow to the left of the search box in the top, right corner of your browser (where you can normally search using a search engine, such as Google)
  2. Select ‘Add British Museum’ from the drop-down list to search the British Museum website or select ‘British Museum collection search’ to search the Collection database (you can add both if you wish)
  3. Searching will then return results from the selected British Museum search.

How do I make sure I always search the British Museum website from here?

Using Internet Explorer 7

Select the tick box for ‘Make this my default search provider’ when adding the British Museum searches, or you can do this later by selecting ‘Change Search Defaults’ in the drop-down list.

How do I go back to searching my default search engine?

To change back click on the arrow to the right of the search box (Internet Explorer 7), or the left of the search box (Firefox) and select whichever search engine is your usual default.
